WHAT WE BELIEVE
WHAT WE BELIEVE
We believe that the Bible is to be received as the authoritative Word of Almighty God, breathed by the Holy Spirit as He spoke through human authors, and that it is the mind of Jesus Christ for His people, His Body, the Church.
PCI also refers to what it calls Subordinate Standards.
They are not God’s Word. Rather they systematise what God’s Word teaches regarding key subjects, and, therefore, testify to the truth, help us guard against heresy and error, and aid our learning and understanding of the truth of God’s Word.
These Subordinate Standards are:
• The Westminster Confession of Faith• The Westminster Confession of Faith Larger Catechism
• The Westminster Confession of Faith Shorter Catechism
The first three questions and answers in the Shorter Catechism are worth noting because they identify what our chief purpose in life is and how we are to achieve this purpose:
Shorter Catechism Question 1: What is man’s primary purpose?
Answer: Man’s primary purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.
Shorter Catechism Question 2: What authority from God directs us how to glorify Him?
Answer: The only authority for glorifying and enjoying Him is the Bible, which is the Word of God and is made up of the Old and New Testaments.
Shorter Catechism Question 3: What does the Bible primarily teach?
Answer: The Bible primarily teaches what man must believe about God and what God requires of man.
The Apostle John records an incident in chapter six of his Gospel when a crowd gathered round Jesus and asked Him,What must we do to do the works God requires? Jesus answered them, The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent. (John. 6:28-29) This is fundamentally what God the Father requires of all people.
